Sample Itinerary

Day one - three
Following a short taxi ride you'll arrive at a small luxurious inn situated on the lip of the dramatic Rio Grande Canyon. The inn features sumptuous guest cottages and an outdoor restaurant with great views and superb menu. The spectacular canyon has a challenging nature trail through primary forest. The Central Valley location will provide an opportunity for optional activities such as an excursion to Poas Volcano or to downtown San Jose.

Days three - six
Tortuguero National Park, located on the northern Atlantic coast is accessible only by boat or plane. This unique area of the country provides visitors with a true wetland jungle experience. Travel by private coach through beautiful Braulio Carillo National Park and then by boat through an inland waterway to your destination in the park.

Stay at a nature lodge near the village of Tortuguero and enjoy its comforts and great food amidst the wild beauty of this coastal park. Tours on the river ways are by shallow-bottomed boats with small, nonpolluting electric motors. Cruise the canals and river system and experience the abundant flora and fauna that result from the high rainfall in the area. Orchids, monkeys, green Macaws, Toucans and crocodiles are amongst the wildlife that you might see. The local beaches are the nesting grounds for four species of sea turtles. There is a resident biologist at the lodge and trained guides will tour the waterways with you.

Days six - nine
Return to San Jose by small plane in time to catch your short flight to the legendary Osa Peninsula on the south Pacific coast where you'll stay at a beautiful nature lodge overlooking the ocean. Many experts feel that the Osa Peninsula has the greatest diversity of plant and animal life on the planet, both on land and in the ocean. You'll have an opportunity to explore Canos Island, a unique off-shore wilderness reserve, and Corcovado National Park, the jewel of the nation's park system. There are opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, diving, hiking and whale and dolphin watching.

Days nine - ten
Return by air to San Jose, travel through the central valley to Atenas, named by National Geographic as having the best climate on the planet. Stay at a small inn renowned for its hospitality and food and enjoy a fabulous celebration meal before flying home the next day.

Day ten
Transfer to the airport for the flight home.
